It can be good news stories, or you can share the challenges that you are facing at the moment or have faced in the past. Your stories will help other families on PEI get through the obstacles they are facing and understand they are not alone.

Let me be the first to share a story with you. I have heard about many parents who take their children to music therapy. I never seemed to find the time to make the call and book the therapy time to see if my son would benefit from it. Well I finally made the time to call Peter Mutch and make an appointment for Brandon. We have had three sessions so far, one a week and he loves it. Brandon is a very musical child and can be found singing songs when you least expect it. He looks forward to me picking him up at school to go to “music class”. We are even considering having Peter visit Brandon’s Early Learning Centre so he can share the experience with some of his peers once a month. A child’s intervention plan may include multiple therapy approaches to best fit each child. Music therapy is one that fits into Brandon’s intervention plan.

Brandon and Benjamin are both gluten and casein (milk) free. It is a biomedical treatment that can benefit some children affected by autism. If you are open to alternative treatments then maybe it will work for your family. Robert and I still eat food that includes gluten and milk, but the boys know and understand that sometimes mommy and daddy eat different food and accept that explaination for the most part.

I was fascinated by your blog. Advocating for autistic kids is a full-time job. The message I try to give aut. moms and dads is we need to get started on creating “enabling events” to teach our kids basic necessary skills. I hope my voice is heard and someone starts an “Institute for Enablement.”

I just wanted to see what can be done to help with the frustration Island parents are going through. My wife has her Human Service Worker II diploma and is very experienced in educational programing. She is interested and ready to open a centre where parents can use a resource room, therapy room, she can also help with assessments and I.E.P’S. She also wants to include a A/V room where video conferencing will be possible for families to talk to professionals without travel expenses. Please let parents know and if you could ask if they would use this centre, so we can start lobbying for government aid. You can e-mail me anytime, and feel free to give it to parents to use as well. She has an established education centre now, but really wants to break into the I.E.P field. It is located in a medical centre currently, centrally located in Ch’town so it is accessible by transit, walking, and drive.

Hi Darren, something that maybe helpful is a facility that can house a social play therapy group, where children on the Autism Spectrum can interact with typically developing peers, in a small group setting for an hour or so a couple of days a week.
